ODENSE: There was no extravagant celebrations when world No. 1 men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei turned 29 yesterday.
But Chong Wei does not mind. He will more than thrilled if he can go back home with his second Denmark Open title.
“A title will be a great gift for me,” said 2005 Denmark Open winner Chong Wei.
On Thursday, he defeated India’s Anand Pawar 21-14, 21-13 in the second round to set up a match with China’s Chen Jin.
Former world champion Chen Jin outclassed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 21-14, 21-16 to check into the last eight.
“I am 29 years old. I look back and I am quite happy with what I have achieved in my badminton career. I have come a long way,” said Chong Wei.
“It also reminds me that my time is running out as far as my childhood dream is concerned – which is to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
“Next year’s London Olympic Games will be my last opportunity to achieve it and I am looking forward to it.
“My heart and mind is all focused on doing well. I have less than 10 months before the Olympic Games. I hope to win the gold before I turn 30.”
